To quote a highly successful entrepreneur friend of mine: “a good business model covers a multitude of sins.”

In this statement, he means that a good business idea, concept, or model, covers up for a lot of executional incompetency. This statement is true, but the reverse is also true.  I’d also like to say that executional competency covers up for a multitude of weaknesses in the business model.

However, the ideal for exponential returns that earn 30, 60, or 100 times the original investment, is a combination of a great business model and execution.

The problem is that the same people, who are gifted in coming up with great business ideas, tend not to be so gifted in operating the day-to-day business in a very efficient manner, and great operators tend not to be great entrepreneurs. There are exceptions of course, but it’s rare.

When an entrepreneur has a great operating partner, the entrepreneur is free to focus on the entrepreneur’s core competencies, such as new product development, vision casting, growth opportunities, sales, exit and so forth. It’s for this reason that we are always looking for great startup business operators who know how to scale a startup business effectively and efficiently from an executional standpoint, but may not have a great startup idea and model to work with.
